Distinction one: water absorption difference
Hydrocolloid
Hydrocolloid dressing can be used to treat acute wounds and can reduce healing time by 40% compared to traditional treatment for skin donor site wounds. It can also reduce pain in burn patients. The dressing has strong water absorption capabilities and is effective in absorbing wound exudates during the first 48 hours after injury.
Hydrogel
Hydrogel dressing absorbs excess exudates, forms a gel to keep wounds moist, and promotes autolysis of tissue. It encapsulates bacteria and microorganisms to prevent infection and promotes wound healing by providing oxygen. Hydrogel wound dressings are water-rich and replenish moisture for wounds during the healing stage (48 hours after wound formation) to improve healing quality.
Both wound dressings have strong water absorption, the Hydrogel dressing contains more moisture, the Hydrogel dressings are more comfortable with better biocompatibility, of course, the cost is more expensive.
Distinction two: principle characteristic is different
Hydrocolloid Dressings
Hydrocolloid dressing absorbs wound exudates and creates a moist environment that speeds up healing.
It sticks to the wound and creates a closed environment that promotes blood vessel growth and tissue formation.
Hydrocolloid dressing can aid in removing dead tissue through its contained enzymes and closed
Hydrogel
Hydrogel dressing both adds moisture and absorbs exudates, aiding in debridement and preventing tissue dryness or necrosis.
Hydrogel dressing promotes wound granulation tissue regeneration, accelerates healing, and minimizes scarring.
Hydrogel dressing is transparent for easy wound observation, comfortable, pain-reducing, and doesn't leave residue or stick to the wound when removed, avoiding further injury.
Distinction three：Scope of application
Hydrocolloid
- Superficial, no infection, no excessive exudation, no dead cavity, no inflamed wound
- Infected wound or black scab wound with less exudation Stage 1 and 2 pressure sore
- Prevention and treatment of mechanical phlebitis
Hydrogel
- Dry scab or rotten tissue wound, cavity and sinus wound.
- Various chronic wounds, 1-2 degree burn wounds, wound surface of skin donor area, etc.
- It is especially suitable for superficial skin injuries, such as abrasions, scratches, scalds and other wounds.
- 4Small to moderate amount of exudation wound
