Frequency depends on wound type, exudate levels, and dressing properties. Dry, low-exudate wounds (e.g., healed surgical incisions) may need dressing changes every 3–5 days, as long as the dressing remains intact and clean-frequent removal can disrupt new tissue growth. For moderate to high-exudate wounds (e.g., infected lacerations or burns), daily changes are often necessary to prevent fluid buildup, which can dilute healing factors and promote bacterial growth. Foam or alginate dressings, designed to absorb large volumes, may last 1–2 days before saturation. If a dressing becomes soiled (e.g., from dirt or feces), wet, or detached, replace it immediately to avoid contamination. Veterinarians may adjust schedules based on healing progress-slower-healing wounds might require more frequent monitoring and changes.
