Before use, check that the tourniquet packaging is intact. If it has been opened or damaged, it may compromise sterility, and using it is not recommended.
After opening the package, select an appropriate location, usually 5 to 10 centimeters proximal to the bleeding site, avoiding wounds, damaged skin, and joints. Wrap the tourniquet smoothly around the limb 2 to 3 times with moderate force, just enough to block arterial blood flow. You can check by palpating the distal pulse; if the pulse disappears, the force is generally appropriate. Then, secure the tourniquet with its fixing devices (such as buckles or Velcro) to prevent it from loosening or slipping. Record the time of application, and release the tourniquet for 1 to 2 minutes every 30 minutes to 1 hour to prevent limb necrosis due to prolonged ischemia. Unless the bleeding is extremely severe, continuous application for an extended period is not advisable.
