Daxue, or Major Snow, is the 21st solar term in the Chinese lunar calendar. It typically falls between December 6 and 8 each year, when the sun reaches 255° longitude. The name "Daxue" does not necessarily mean heavy snowfall but indicates the beginning of a period when snow becomes more frequent, especially in northern China.

Climate Characteristics of Daxue

  • Significant Temperature Drop: After Daxue, cold air intensifies, and temperatures plummet with noticeable day-night temperature differences.
  • Increased Snowfall: Northern areas may experience snow accumulation, while southern regions might see light snow.
  • Winter Moisture: Snowfall adds moisture to the air, alleviating the dryness of winter.

Customs and Traditions

  • Curing Meats: Families start curing meats during this period in preparation for the Chinese New Year.
  • Winter Nourishment: There is a saying, "Nourish during Daxue to fight tigers next year," emphasizing the importance of consuming warming foods like mutton and beef.
  • Appreciating Snow Scenery: Ancient poets often admired the snowy landscapes, creating iconic verses like "A thousand miles of ice, ten thousand miles of snow."

Health and Farming Tips

  • Health Advice: Keep warm and stay active to promote blood circulation. Include nourishing foods such as dates, yams, and lamb in your diet.
  • Agricultural Activities: While northern regions enter a farming hiatus, measures must be taken to protect winter crops from frost.
  • Daxue not only marks a natural transition but also reflects the wisdom and deep understanding of seasonal changes in Chinese culture.
